A speech at the French Consulate of Los Angeles

Through the French Ministry of Education’s TAPIF program, I spent a school year in France’s Réunion Island teaching English to middle and high school students. The work taught me how to manage diverse groups of students, construct lesson plans, and think on my feet in the classroom. Living in La Réunion was an invaluable lesson in adapting to a different way of life, and an incredible adventure.

I was invited to speak about my experience teaching English in France at the French Consulate of Los Angeles. I spoke to an audience of ~60 attendees that included prospective teachers, program alumni, consulate staff, and members of LA’s French education community.

It started when I asked my aunt what her dream birthday cake would be. Now, whenever a friend’s special day comes around (and when I have the time), I delight in making them exactly what they want. My baking hobby has taught me a lot about working with my hands, trusting my creative instincts, and experimentation.
